How to Evaluate Investment Managers

How to Evaluate an Investment Manager: Individual Stocks vs. Model Portfolios | Updated Nov 1, 2026

Why personalized investment management matters for high-net-worth investors

Not all investment managers approach portfolio construction the same way. Some rely on standardized model portfolios, while others research and select individual securities based on each client’s financial circumstances, investment objectives, and tax considerations. Understanding these differences is important when evaluating a financial advisor, particularly for high-net-worth investors with complex financial needs.

What Is a Model Portfolio?

A model portfolio is a predefined allocation of investments, typically consisting of mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs), designed around a particular risk tolerance or investment objective. Many financial advisory firms use models developed by third-party investment strategists or asset management platforms.

Model portfolios can provide diversification, consistency, and cost efficiency. However, standardized allocations may offer less flexibility when addressing concentrated stock positions, significant unrealized capital gains, or individual tax circumstances.

Individual Security Selection and Active Portfolio Management

An alternative approach involves researching, selecting, and actively managing individual stocks and bonds. Rather than relying primarily on predetermined allocations, investment decisions are informed by fundamental research, financial statement analysis, valuation, market conditions, and the investor’s specific financial objectives.

Individual stock selection allows an investment manager to evaluate earnings quality, cash flow, balance sheet strength, competitive positioning, and long-term growth prospects. Portfolio holdings can be adjusted as company fundamentals, valuations, or investment opportunities change.

This approach requires ongoing research, disciplined risk management, and careful attention to diversification. Active management also involves investment risk and does not guarantee superior returns compared with diversified model portfolios.

Why Tax Efficiency and Customization Matter

For high-net-worth investors, investment performance should be evaluated in conjunction with taxes, costs, and overall financial planning objectives.

A customized portfolio of individual securities may provide greater flexibility in managing capital gains, harvesting tax losses, transitioning appreciated holdings, and coordinating investment decisions with retirement income needs or other financial circumstances.

For example, an investor transferring a portfolio with substantial unrealized gains may benefit from a gradual, tax-aware transition rather than immediately liquidating existing investments to conform to a standardized allocation.

Individual security ownership can also provide more control over the timing of realized gains and losses. However, the benefits depend on each investor’s circumstances, and tax-efficient implementation cannot eliminate market risk or guarantee better after-tax performance.

The Di Bello Financial Approach

At Di Bello Financial, investment research, security selection, and portfolio management are conducted in-house under the leadership of founder Annette Di Bello, CPA/PFS, CFP®.

Our portfolios are constructed using individually selected stocks and bonds, complemented by low-cost ETFs where appropriate for diversification and targeted market exposure. Investment decisions incorporate fundamental company research, valuation analysis, portfolio risk, and each client’s financial and tax circumstances.

Unlike an approach that relies primarily on outsourced model portfolios, our investment process emphasizes direct oversight, ongoing security evaluation, and individualized portfolio decisions.

As a fee-only fiduciary firm, we integrate active investment management with proactive tax planning and comprehensive wealth management. This coordinated approach is particularly valuable for affluent individuals, families, and business owners navigating retirement, concentrated investments, or complex financial decisions.

Choosing the Right Investment Manager

When evaluating a financial advisor, investors should understand who makes investment decisions, how securities are selected, whether portfolios are customized, and how tax considerations influence ongoing management.

The distinction is not simply between active and passive investing. It is about understanding the investment process, the degree of personalization, and whether the advisor’s approach aligns with the investor’s financial circumstances.

For investors seeking direct investment oversight and coordinated tax strategy, a customized, actively managed portfolio may offer meaningful advantages.
